October Trip Highlights

Trinity has now taken two trips to New Bern, NC to help those who have been affected by Hurricane Florence. We would love for you to be part of our next trip on December 1-2.

The best part has been establishing relationships with families we were able to help and returning to continue the work is important.  The most eye-opening part of the second trip was witnessing just how much devastation still existed a month after the storm. Although many homes had already been gutted and repair work was in process, there are still so many people that have a long road ahead of them.
That is where the volunteers come in. We were delighted to see that there are many people coming from all over the country to help this small town. Samaritan's Purse put us on a team with people who traveled from New Hampshire and Hawaii because they felt the call to come alongside their brothers and sisters in their time of need. It is truly a humbling experience to be a small part of the healing process for people in one of the most difficult times of their lives.

September Trip Highlights

Our first trip to New Bern for Hurricane Florence clean-up was AWESOME.  What a time we had. Signing In

We met as strangers in the Founders Inn parking lot.  Jeff knew Eddie from the Princess Anne campus, and recognized Rob’s face.  Linda and Arnetta knew one another. Other than that we were all new faces.  By the end of the trip we were fast friends.

We left Founders at 4 am to arrive at 7:30 at Port City Community Church. "My jaw dropped at the scene in the parking lot," said Jeff Gross. "I’ve been doing disaster relief since Hurricane Andrew but have never seen the level of organization and capability that I saw there. Samaritan’s Purse had several 40- and 50-foot trailers on location, along with a fleet of pickup trucks, campers, trailers, and box trucks.  There was a large mobile kitchen, a shower trailer sent from heaven, a small engine repair shop, mobile offices and lodging, and a chaplain’s center ready to receive people from the community."

Signing in was easy.  “Get your t-shirt. Fill out this paper.  Here’s where you sleep. Dinner is at six.”  There was never a point at which we didn’t know where to go or what to do.  Orientation was quick; one great thing about SP’s program is that volunteers just have to show up.  No skills required, no tools required except glasses, gloves, and sturdy shoes. Come with a group or by yourself and they will put you to work.

The Work

By 10:30 am on Saturday we were on our second assignment and the real work began. Homeowner Ricky is a city firefighter and his wife is a hospital nurse, so they’ve been busy since the hurricane.  When they weren’t on the job, they were volunteering at their neighbor’s homes while neglecting their own. It was our pleasure to serve them by removing damaged drywall and carpet, putting tarps on the roof, and clearing the lot of storm debris.

The next day we worked for Jim and Carol, emptying their outbuilding of still-soaked belongings. The main house only received two inches of water, which means coincidentally that the water was in the house for much less time, but it makes no difference - all the floors have to be removed, and the drywall needs to be removed to four feet.

We left both homes with much work remaining, but that’s for someone else now, our fellow volunteers from who-knows-where.  We were blessed to bless these families for a short time.

This is a great shot of four friends.

The Plan

We're going back to New Bern each month for the foreseeable future, just two days each time. Let me ask you, can you join us for one of these trips?  Skill doesn’t matter so much as a willing heart, and maybe some courage.  I know you’re busy, but can you fit just two days of relief work into your schedule? There’s no reason a church like Trinity can’t send twenty-five workers a month, perhaps more, even if we each went only once.  It will never be easier than working through Samaritan’s Purse.

It is Well

Dear Father,  We believe what is written in Psalm 107:29.  He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.  Do it again!  In Jesus Name.

Keep the faith,  He is faithful.  Watch for His mercies.

A Call to Prayer

Please continue to pray for those who are putting their lives back together in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

Following are scripture verses to pray as we seek encouragement and comfort for our Southern brothers and sisters.

God is our refuge and strength,an ever-present help in trouble.  Psalm 46: 1

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.  Deuteronomy 31:8-9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

Please pray ask God how he would have you respond:

Through prayer, volunteering, or giving
